Josh Kerr Breaks Men's Mile World Record
Josh Kerr broke the men's mile world record on Saturday. He ran 3 minutes 42.66 seconds.
The race took place at the London Diamond League in the United Kingdom. American Yared Nuguse finished second.
Nuguse ran 3:45.69. The old record was set by Hicham El Guerrouj in Rome in 1999.
That record had stood for 27 years. Kerr broke it at a sold-out event in London.
Kerr is Scottish. He is the first Briton to hold this record since the 1980s.
Runners Seb Coe Steve Ovett and Steve Cram held it back then. Kerr's sponsor Brooks called his effort 'Project 222.' The name came from his target time of 222 seconds.
Klear Note — The mile is a classic running distance in track and field. World records in this event are rarely broken and stand for many years.
