Judge Drops Case Against Wrongfully Deported Man

A US judge dropped criminal charges against Kilmar Abrego Garcia. He is a man from El Salvador who lived in Maryland.

He was wrongfully sent back to El Salvador last year due to a paperwork error. The judge found the Justice Department acted with a personal grudge against him.

The charges were human smuggling and planning to smuggle people. They came from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee.

The government had closed its case when Abrego Garcia was deported. But it reopened the case after he sued over his removal.

The Trump administration had used him as the public face of its deportation campaign. Then charges were filed against him.

The Justice Department called the ruling wrong and plans to appeal. Reports say the US is now looking at deporting him to African countries including Liberia.

Klear Note Wrongful deportation means someone was sent out of the country by mistake. A judge can drop charges if they find the government acted unfairly or with bias.
