Judge Rules Pentagon Illegally Punished AI Company
A judge ruled Thursday night that the Pentagon acted illegally. The Pentagon had punished AI company Anthropic.
This was over Anthropic's criticism of military AI use. The judge called the Pentagon's actions "illegal and baseless." The judge blocked the Pentagon's listing of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk.
The judge also found likely violations of Fifth Amendment due-process protections. The judge said the government broke procurement law too.
The Pentagon argued the listing was needed for national security. It claimed Anthropic could disable technology linked to classified systems during wartime.
The judge rejected this reasoning as unlawful and arbitrary. Anthropic sued the Pentagon in March.
The company said the listing was retaliation. Anthropic had refused unrestricted military use of its Claude AI system.
The Defense Department also barred military use of Claude in March. The Trump administration called the ruling illegal retaliation. The government is expected to fight the ruling.
