Keiko Fujimori was inaugurated as Peru's president after a narrow election victory. She is the 51-year-old daughter of late former President Alberto Fujimori.

She becomes Peru's ninth president in just a decade. During her inauguration, Fujimori pledged to deploy armed forces to crime-ridden areas.

She vowed to fight crime with an "iron fist" as part of a hardline security strategy. Peru is experiencing its worst wave of gang violence, extortion, and illegal mining in decades.

That crisis prompted her security commitments. Fujimori also announced a 15% increase in the minimum wage.

She pledged to fight rural malnutrition. Opposition leaders are pressing her to reverse crime-related laws passed under prior governments.

They also want a probe into 50 civilian deaths during 2022-2023 protests. Relatives of those victims say they don't recognize her presidency. They are protesting her inauguration.
