Kentucky Governor Asks McConnell for Health Update

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear sent a letter to Senator Mitch McConnell's staff. He asked for a health update on McConnell's condition.

Beshear also asked if McConnell believes he can still do his job. McConnell is an 84-year-old Republican senator from Kentucky.

He was taken to hospital on June 14. Emergency workers went to his Washington home that day.

They found an unconscious person and performed CPR for a cardiac arrest. McConnell is not running for re-election.

His term ends in early January. A 2024 Kentucky law means the governor cannot appoint a replacement senator. Instead a special election must be held if the seat becomes empty.

Klear Note McConnell is a long-serving Republican senator from Kentucky. Kentucky law requires a special election, not governor appointment, if the Senate seat opens.
