Kremlin Critic Nadezhdin Flees Russia to Paris
Boris Nadezhdin is an anti-war politician and Kremlin critic. He has fled Russia to Paris, France.
Nadezhdin ran against Vladimir Putin in Russia's 2024 presidential election. He was barred from the ballot before that vote.
Russia's Supreme Court had ruled his campaign signatures invalid. He never formally appeared on the ballot against Putin.
Nadezhdin was recently detained outside Moscow. Russian leaders also labeled him a foreign agent.
He was banned from running in September's parliamentary elections. That ban prompted his flight from Russia.
His detention and the foreign agent label also played a role. Reports say Nadezhdin had been banned from leaving Russia.
It remains unclear how he managed to leave. He was reportedly fined for showing a photo of Alexei Navalny.
Authorities called the photo an extremist symbol. Nadezhdin posted a video from outside the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
He said 'Good news: I'm alive and free.' Moscow is tightening its grip on dissent before the elections. Russia's crackdown has left most critics in jail exile or dead.
