Labour MP Steps Down to Let Burnham Challenge Starmer

Andy Burnham is the mayor of Greater Manchester in England. He has been offered a Labour seat in parliament.

Labour MP Josh Simons agreed to step down from his Makerfield seat for Burnham. A by-election will follow.

This would let Burnham return to parliament and challenge Keir Starmer as Labour leader. Burnham had been trying to return to parliament for months.

Starmer previously blocked him from running in the Gorton and Denton by-election. Labour lost that seat to the Green Party.

This put pressure on Starmer's allies not to block Burnham again. Former health secretary Wes Streeting also resigned. His exit is seen as part of wider tensions inside the Labour Party.

Klear Note Labour Party is the main opposition party in UK politics. The party leader is chosen by MPs and members. By-elections happen when an MP steps down, letting voters pick a replacement.
