Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met US President Donald Trump on July 21 in Washington. This was their first face-to-face meeting.

It was the first visit by a Lebanese leader to Washington since 2009. The visit capped a four-day trip.

Aoun also met Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday. Rubio reportedly warned Lebanon will never be fully at peace.

He said this depends on solving the Hezbollah issue. The talks come as Lebanon carries out a deal with Israel.

The deal was announced on June 26. It requires Hezbollah to disarm.

Hezbollah is a militia backed by Iran. The deal also requires Israeli forces to leave southern Lebanon.

Lebanon's military has now moved into southern Lebanon under the deal. Israel and Lebanon are also testing safe zones in the region.

The US State Department said Monday that work had started in three pilot villages. These are Froun Srifa and part of Zawtar al-Gharbieh.

But an Israeli military official said Tuesday the withdrawal has not started. Israeli forces still occupy a large part of southern Lebanon.

This follows past rocket attacks by Hezbollah on northern Israel. Israel says Hezbollah must disarm before it will withdraw. Hezbollah has reportedly rejected the deal and refused to disarm.
