Maduro Returns to Court on Terror Charges
Nicolás Maduro returned to court in New York on Thursday. He is Venezuela's former leader, removed from power in January.
United States military forces captured him in an overnight raid on January 3. He now faces narco-terrorism charges.
His lawyer argued Venezuela should pay his legal fees. The prosecution disagreed, and the dispute was not resolved.
A judge said the right to a defense was very important. Maduro's wife, Cilia Flores, also pleaded not guilty to separate cocaine and weapons charges.
Klear Note — Maduro led Venezuela since 2013. Narco-terrorism means using drug trafficking to fund violent activities. The US captured him during a military operation in January.
