Maine Democrat Bellows Quits Senate Race Helping Jackson
Shenna Bellows ended her campaign in Maine's Democratic Senate race on Sunday. She is Maine's secretary of state.
Bellows said she needs to focus on that job. She pointed to actions by the Trump administration.
Her exit came after Troy Jackson won most delegates in county meetings on Saturday. Jackson's group won about 91% of those delegates.
Bellows leaving helps strengthen Jackson's position in the race. Jackson is a former state Senate leader.
He is building support to become the nominee. Nirav Shah is another strong candidate still running.
Candidates must submit 500 signatures by Monday. This lets them join the July 25 nominating meeting in Bangor Maine.
There 601 delegates will pick the party's nominee. The race is to replace Graham Platner as the Democratic Senate nominee.
