Mali Army Convoy Attacked in Gao Region

Rebels ambushed a Mali army convoy on Saturday. The attack happened in the northern Gao region of Mali.

Many soldiers were killed or captured. Mali's military confirmed the attack happened on Saturday.

Two groups said they carried out the attack. One group is JNIM a regional al-Qaida ally.

The other group is the Azawad Liberation Front. This is a separatist group called FLA.

Rebels shared videos showing soldiers lined up appearing to surrender. Some soldiers were reportedly shown being shot while lying down.

These videos could not be verified independently. Observers say the attack shows growing teamwork between FLA and JNIM.

They warn this partnership is a rising risk to Mali's stability. In April the two groups carried out their largest joint attack in over a decade.

Klear Note Mali's north has faced rebel violence for years. JNIM and FLA are armed groups fighting the government in this region.
