Maltese Court Acquits Fenech in Journalist's 2017 Killing

A court in Malta acquitted Yorgen Fenech on Wednesday. He was accused of complicity in journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia's murder.

He was also acquitted of criminal association charges. The trial lasted about two months.

Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb in 2017. The bombing happened near her home in Bidnija, Malta.

Fenech had been accused of masterminding the attack. His acquittal covered those allegations.

Other men have been convicted in connection with the killing. The verdict brought criticism from Caruana Galizia's family.

Press freedom advocates also condemned the decision. The family said the acquittal denied her justice. Her son called it a "terrible decision."

Klear Note — An acquittal means the court found the accused not guilty.
