Hadi Matar, 28, was convicted Wednesday on federal terrorism charges. The case came from the 2022 stabbing of author Salman Rushdie.

The attack happened at a literary event in New York. A jury found him guilty of all charges.

These included taking part in international terrorism. He was also convicted of helping a terrorist group.

Prosecutors said Matar tried to help Hezbollah through the attack. Hezbollah is a group based in Lebanon.

They said he was inspired by a 1989 order. Iran's leader Ayatollah Khomeini had called for Rushdie's death.

This was over Rushdie's book The Satanic Verses. Matar stabbed Rushdie many times during the 2022 attack.

Rushdie testified at the trial about his injuries. He said his wounds were spread across his body.

Matar now faces a possible life sentence. He is already serving 25 years for attempted murder in New York.
