Mangione to Use Psychiatric Defense in Murder Trial
Luigi Mangione will use a psychiatric defense in his murder trial. He is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare boss Brian Thompson in Manhattan in 2024.
A judge confirmed this on Wednesday. Mangione's lawyers say he was suffering from extreme emotional disturbance when Thompson was killed.
This is a partial defense. It does not aim to clear him of all charges.
If it works it could reduce his charge from murder to manslaughter. The judge also dropped a weapons charge from the case.
A loaded magazine found in Mangione's bag was ruled out as evidence. The state trial is set for September 8 2026. Mangione also faces a separate federal trial on October 13 2026.
Klear Note — Brian Thompson was a UnitedHealthcare executive. His 2024 killing drew major attention. Psychiatric defense claims mental illness reduced criminal responsibility.
