Merz Visits Kyiv After Russian Attacks on Bridges

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv on Sunday. He wanted to show support for Ukraine.

Russia had attacked the city's infrastructure including three bridges. Three of Kyiv's six road bridges were fully or partly closed.

Those closures followed Russian attacks earlier in the week. A drone also struck the Northern Bridge on Sunday.

Air raid sirens sounded during Merz's visit. Germany announced more than €1.3 billion in aid.

Merz also announced new measures to support Ukraine. Germany and Ukraine plan to jointly produce anti-jet drones.

Merz said Ukraine "will need our support." He called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end his "senseless war." The Financial Times says Russia's air war is growing ahead of winter. It also reports more "hybrid" attacks on Europe.

This was Merz's fourth visit to Ukraine as chancellor. He previously visited Kyiv in May 2025.
