Lionel Messi announced his retirement from Argentina's national team. He shared the news Monday on Instagram.

The announcement came weeks after Argentina lost the World Cup final. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time.

Ferran Torres scored the winning goal for Spain. Messi had led Argentina to that final.

Messi is 39 years old. He said different chapters were ending.

He said little time remained for him. He said the decision hurt him.

He said he understood the time had come. Messi still plays club soccer for Inter Miami.

This retirement only covers international soccer, not his club career. Messi represented Argentina for two decades.

His international career included six World Cups and 98 goals. He previously won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.
