Messi Becomes All-Time World Cup Top Scorer
Lionel Messi scored twice against Austria to make history. His first goal was his 17th World Cup goal ever.
That broke the men's record held by Miroslav Klose of 16 goals. Then Messi scored again in the same match.
His 18th World Cup goal passed Marta's women's record of 17. Messi is now the top scorer across all World Cups ever played.
Argentina won the match 2-0. Messi had already matched Klose's record with a hat-trick against Algeria. That was in Argentina's first match of the 2026 World Cup.
Klear Note — The World Cup is soccer's biggest tournament. It happens every four years with teams from around the world.
