Navi Pillay Wins 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

Navi Pillay won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. The prize was given in Oslo, Norway.

It was for her efforts to promote peace and international law. The Nobel Committee cited her work on prosecuting war crimes.

Her work also covered crimes against humanity and genocide. The prize does not decide if genocide happened in Gaza.

That is a matter for courts. A United Nations commission led by Pillay concluded Israel committed genocide.

The genocide targeted Palestinians in Gaza. The Israeli government rejected the commission's finding.

US President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also rejected it. Pillay was born in South Africa.

She is a former United Nations human rights chief. She is also a judge at the International Court of Justice.

She is now a judge in a case about Myanmar. She also served on the Rwanda tribunal and the International Criminal Court.

Klear Note — International law sets rules for how countries interact and resolve disputes. A Nobel award recognizes work, not a legal finding about genocide.
