Nebraska First State to Add Medicaid Work Rules
Nebraska started Medicaid work requirements on May 1. It is the first state to do so.
This is eight months before the federal deadline of January 1, 2027. About 25,000 residents could lose health coverage as a result.
These residents qualified under the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion. Not all current members will be checked right away.
The first group affected are those whose coverage ends July 31, 2026. A phased rollout will continue through June 2027.
President Trump's budget law requires most states to add similar rules from January 2027. Montana and Iowa also plan early starts on July 1 and December 1, 2026.
Critics and watchdog groups raised concerns about Nebraska's fast rollout. The state health website was scheduled for maintenance starting May 1.
No new staff were hired to handle the extra work. Many enrollees reportedly did not understand the notices they got.
