New York City Mayor Gives Pro-Immigrant Speech Before Trump
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani gave a speech on Thursday. It marked America's 250th birthday.
He spoke from George Washington's old desk at City Hall. Naturalized citizens stood around him.
Mamdani is also a naturalized citizen himself. He praised New York City's long history of welcoming immigrants.
He rejected Trump's view of the country and its immigrants. Trump has tried to deport large numbers of immigrants during his second term as president.
Mamdani said America's strength comes from everyday people. Hours later Trump was set to speak at Mount Rushmore for the same anniversary. The two speeches showed very different ideas about what America means.
Klear Note — America's 250th birthday marks the nation's founding in 1776. Naturalized citizens are immigrants who became US citizens through legal process.
