New York City Mayor Skips Israel Day Parade
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not attend the Israel Day Parade. No mayor has skipped the parade since it began in 1964.
Mamdani said he stayed away as a matter of political principle. He supports Palestinian rights.
He had signaled this plan during his election campaign. But Mamdani promised record police security for the event.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch attended as an honorary grand marshal. The parade took place during a period of declining public support for Israel. Antisemitism has also been rising across the United States.
