New York Judge Pauses Mangione Murder Trial
A New York judge paused Luigi Mangione's state murder trial. The pause follows his federal guilty plea last week.
Prosecutors say Mangione admitted stalking and shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. His lawyers then asked Judge Gregory Carro to dismiss the state charges.
They argue he should not face trial twice for the same crime. This is called double jeopardy.
Judge Carro issued an order Monday. He gave the Manhattan District Attorney's Office until October 9 to respond.
The state trial was set to start September 8 2026. Now it has been pushed back until December.
The delay does not mean double jeopardy protections apply. Judges still need to decide that question.
