North Korea Launches Missiles After Trump Plans Kim Meeting
North Korea launched about 10 missiles toward the sea Thursday. South Korea and Japan detected the launches around 5 p.m.
The United States had scaled back joint military drills with South Korea. North Korea rejected that order.
The missiles launched a day later. Trump said he plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
He said the meeting would happen later this year. The missile launches came hours after his statement.
Trump also claimed Kim Jong Un had responded to his outreach. But Kim Yo-jong denied this claim.
Kim Yo-jong is Kim Jong Un's sister and a powerful adviser. She said she was unaware of any contact with Washington.
She said relations between Trump and Kim remained excellent. South Korea increased surveillance and coordinated with the United States and Japan.
South Korea's security council urged North Korea to stop the launches. United Nations resolutions ban these kinds of missile launches.
