Peru Election: Fujimori Leads as Count Continues
Peru held a runoff presidential election. Over 90% of votes have been counted.
Right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori leads left-wing politician Roberto Sánchez. Fujimori has about 52.6% and Sánchez has about 47.4%.
That gap is roughly 715,000 votes. Sánchez has not conceded.
A final result may not come until mid-July. The race has been shaped by concerns over crime and political instability.
Fujimori ran on promises to be tough on crime. Sánchez vowed to close the gap between cities and rural areas.
Fujimori leads strongly in Lima. Sánchez leads in rural regions.
Peru is choosing its 9th leader in just ten years. Fujimori is the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori.
He was convicted of human rights abuses. Sánchez is an ally of Pedro Castillo who is a jailed former president of Peru.
