Philippine House Impeaches Sara Duterte a Second Time
The Philippine House voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte. The vote was 257 to 25.
This is her second impeachment. She is the first official in Philippine history to be impeached twice.
Her first impeachment in 2025 was cancelled by the Supreme Court on a legal technicality. Charges include alleged unexplained wealth and misuse of state funds.
She also allegedly threatened to have President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. assassinated. Prosecutors flagged over $110 million in private bank dealings.
Duterte is a rival of President Marcos Jr.
If convicted in a Senate trial she would be removed from office. She would also be blocked from running for president in 2028.
But the New York Times says the case is likely to fail in the Senate. Reports say Duterte's allies took control of the Senate just as the House voted. They elected a known Duterte ally as Senate President.
