Rubio Visits India Amid Tensions Over Tariffs and China
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in India on May 23. It is his first official visit to the country.
The four-day trip runs through May 26. He will visit Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi.
The visit aims to repair US-India relations and strengthen the Quad alliance. The Quad is a strategic alliance of India, the US, Japan and Australia.
Tensions grew after Trump reached out to China and warmed ties with Pakistan. Reports say high US tariffs on Indian exports are also a source of friction.
Rubio is set to meet Prime Minister Modi and Foreign Minister Jaishankar. The talks will cover trade, technology, defense and key minerals. A Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting is planned for May 26 in New Delhi.
Klear Note — The Quad is a four-country alliance focused on security in Asia. High US tariffs make Indian goods more expensive in American markets.
