Russia and Ukraine Announce Separate Ceasefires

Russian attacks killed at least 20 people before both sides announced ceasefires. Drone and missile strikes hit Ukraine's power grid.

The strikes killed at least 5 people and wounded 39 others. Russia and Ukraine then announced separate ceasefires on different dates.

Ukraine said its ceasefire would start on 6 May at midnight. Russia announced a pause for 8 to 9 May to hold its Victory Day parade.

Ukraine said it would respond in kind to Russia's pause. Russia threatened a large missile strike on central Kyiv if Ukraine disrupted Victory Day events.

Russia also warned civilians and foreign diplomats to leave the city. President Zelensky criticized Russia for launching deadly attacks while also seeking a truce. He called it "utter cynicism." Putin first suggested the ceasefire idea during a phone call with US President Trump the week before.

Klear Note Russia and Ukraine have fought since 2022. Victory Day on May 9 marks Russia's World War II victory. Ceasefires are temporary stops in fighting.
