Saudi Arabia-backed Yemeni government forces struck an airport in Sana’a, Yemen. This prompted Houthi rebels to fire missiles back.

The Houthis are rebels in Yemen backed by Iran. The Saudi strike was linked to a dispute over an Iranian plane.

The plane was reportedly trying to land in Sana'a. Reports say the flight carried a Houthi delegation on a Mahan Air plane.

The delegation was reportedly returning from events linked to the death of Iran's top leader. The plane was later sent to Hodeidah airport instead.

Hodeidah is controlled by the Houthis. The Houthis then threatened to strike King Khalid Airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

This threat raised tensions between the two sides. Reports say Houthi strikes actually hit Abha International Airport instead.

Strikes reportedly also hit two Saudi air bases in southern Saudi Arabia. A four-year truce between Yemen and Saudi Arabia is now at risk.

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting. Members reportedly voiced concern about wider conflict in the region.
