Secret Service Shoots Armed Suspect Near White House
US Secret Service agents shot and wounded an armed suspect near the White House on Monday. A young bystander was also hit during the shooting.
Reports say the suspect shot the bystander rather than Secret Service agents. The incident happened near the National Mall in Washington.
It took place shortly after Vice President JD Vance's motorcade passed through the area. Officials said Vance was not a target.
Plainclothes officers spotted the suspect and believed he had a gun. The suspect then ran and opened fire at officers.
Officers fired back and wounded him. The suspect's gunfire triggered a brief White House lockdown.
Secret Service deputy director Matthew Quinn gave details about how officers identified the suspect. Sources say the Metropolitan Police Department will look into how officers used force.
