Senate Blocks Homeland Security Funding

Senate Democrats blocked a funding package for the Department of Homeland Security on Thursday. The department will shut down at midnight Friday or early Saturday morning.

Democrats were angry about the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. Republicans proposed a two-week funding extension but Democrats rejected it.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has plenty of federal funding. So it will largely continue working during the shutdown.

Klear Note A government shutdown happens when Congress doesn't approve funding. Agencies stop most work until funding passes. ICE enforces immigration laws and has separate funding.
