Soldier Bet on Secret Maduro Mission Now Charged

A US Special Forces soldier has been charged with 5 crimes. He is Master Sergeant based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He was part of a secret plan to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

He used secret details from that plan to place bets online. The bets earned him over $400,000.

He placed the bets on a site called Polymarket. Master Sergeant then tried to hide what he had done.

That cover-up became part of the charges against him. He faces charges including fraud and theft of secret government information.

Polymarket spotted the bets and told the US Department of Justice. Reports say this is the first time a law called the Eddie Murphy Rule has led to criminal charges.

Klear Note The Eddie Murphy Rule bans federal employees from betting on events they have inside knowledge about. Polymarket is a website where people bet money on real-world events.
