South Africa Pulls Back Asylum Rule After Violent Protests
South Africa pulled back an asylum rule after anti-migrant protests. The protests turned violent on Thursday 8 October.
Deutsche Welle reported that unrest in Durban followed a protest. The protest asked a refugee center to stop handling asylum applications.
The violence later spread to Soweto. Police said 10 vehicles were burned in Soweto and 14 in Durban.
Goods were also stolen from shops. Euronews reported the protests followed a July court ruling.
That ruling made it easier to apply for asylum. It removed barriers for some people who entered without permission.
But it did not give them refugee status on its own. Officials said refugee offices had far too much work.
South Africa has seen violence many times before. Such violence often targets migrants from nearby countries.
