South Korea's Ex-President Gets Life Sentence
Former President Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday. A court found him guilty of masterminding an insurrection.
Yoon tried to impose martial law in December 2024. The court said his actions damaged South Korea's democracy. Yoon is the first elected leader in South Korea's democratic era to receive this maximum sentence.
Klear Note — Martial law gives military control over civilian government. South Korea's democracy has faced threats before from military leaders. This is the harshest punishment for any elected leader there.
