France had hoped to reach the final for a third straight tournament. That bid ended with the loss.

Spain last reached the World Cup final in 2010. That year Spain won its only World Cup title.

Didier Deschamps managed France during the match. It was reportedly his last match in charge.

He will lead France in Saturday's third-place game before leaving the role. The match was only the second World Cup meeting between France and Spain.

Spain arrived on an unbeaten run of 37 games. That run included 28 wins and 9 draws with no losses. Spain will face the winner of Argentina versus England in Sunday's final.
