Spain to Add Border Checks on Travelers From Italy
Spain will add temporary border checks for travelers coming from Italy. The checks start at midnight Saturday.
They will last until September 7. Spain's Interior Ministry said this is a direct response to Italy.
Italy had added similar border controls earlier. This followed about 78,000 migrants entering Spain's territory of Ceuta.
The migrants came from nearby Morocco. Ceuta is a Spanish territory located in North Africa.
Italy has faced ongoing pressure from illegal migration. Reports on August 7 said Italy rejected Spain's request.
Spain had asked Italy to remove its border controls. Italy said its checks will stay until at least August 15.
The European Commission looked into the situation. It found no movement of migrants from Ceuta to mainland Spain. It also found no movement to other parts of Europe.
