Starmer Sorry Over Mandelson Security Cover-Up

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke to lawmakers on Monday. He said he made the wrong choice in appointing Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to the United States.

Starmer said sorry to victims of Jeffrey Epstein. Foreign Office leaders gave Mandelson security clearance in January 2025.

But the vetting agency had said no to that clearance. No one told Starmer or other ministers about this decision.

Starmer said someone made a deliberate choice to hide the vetting findings from him. He ordered a check into security concerns linked to Mandelson's time as ambassador.

Mandelson was removed from the ambassador role in September 2025. Reports say the top Foreign Office civil servant Olly Robbins was fired over the decision to ignore the vetting agency.

Reports say Mandelson was arrested in February 2026. He is suspected of misconduct in public office over alleged leaks of sensitive government data to Epstein. All main opposition parties have called for Starmer to resign.

Klear Note Security clearance is official approval to access secret government information. The vetting agency checks if someone is safe to trust with secrets.
