Syria and Russia Agree to End Base Use
Syria and Russia reached a new military agreement this week. The deal changes Russia's military presence in Syria.
It ends Russia's use of two Mediterranean bases as outposts. The two countries negotiated for more than a year and a half.
Damascus will now control the Hmeimim air base. Damascus will also control part of Tartous port.
Russia's other military sites will become joint training centers. This means Russia will still work with Syria at some sites.
These bases were key outposts during Russia's support for Bashar Assad's government. Syria said the agreement opens a new phase in relations between the two countries.
Klear Note — Russia used these bases while supporting Bashar Assad’s government.
