Syria's Kurdish-Led SDF Group Dissolved
The Syrian Democratic Forces was dissolved on Aug. 25 2026.
SDF commander Mazloum Abdi announced this in Damascus, Syria. Abdi said the group's merger with Syria's army was complete.
The SDF is a Kurdish-led group. It helped defeat the Islamic State with US support.
The group once controlled parts of northern and eastern Syria. That area covered about 25% of the country.
The dissolution follows an agreement reached in January. That deal called for phased integration of Kurdish fighters into Syria's military.
The dissolution is seen as a major step in that process. Questions remain about how the SDF's all-female units will join. The United States called the integration plan a historic milestone.
Klear Note — The SDF fought Islamic State with U.S. support during Syria's long conflict.
