Tear Gas Used at Beagle Breeding Protest
About 1,000 protesters tried to break into a beagle breeding facility in Wisconsin. The facility is called Ridglan Farms and is in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin.
It breeds beagles for use in medical testing. Police used tear gas and pepper spray to stop the breach.
Arrests were made during the protest. The Dane County Sheriff said 300 to 400 protesters actively tried to get inside.
This was the second breach attempt in two months. In March 27 people were arrested after protesters broke in and took 30 dogs.
The facility reportedly houses about 2,000 beagles. The group's leader Wayne Hsiung was reportedly among those arrested.
Ridglan Farms has reportedly agreed to give up its state breeding licence by July 1. This is reportedly part of a deal to avoid prosecution for animal mistreatment.
Klear Note — Beagles are commonly used in medical research because their size and genetics are similar to humans. Animal rights groups oppose breeding facilities that supply dogs for testing.
