Tennessee Governor Halts 2026 Executions After Failed Attempt on Pike

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee halted all remaining executions for 2026. He also ordered an independent review.

This followed a failed attempt to execute Christa Pike last week. Pike is a death row inmate in Tennessee.

She received two doses of a lethal-injection drug. Her attorneys identified the drug as pentobarbital.

She was taken from the execution chamber by ambulance to a hospital. Her lawyers said she was awake and speaking there.

Experts and lawyers called her apparent recovery unprecedented. She is believed to be the only known survivor of lethal injection.

Her attorneys want her death sentence reduced to life without parole. The execution was for the 1995 death of classmate Colleen Slemmer. Slemmer was beaten and stabbed.

Klear Note — Lethal injection uses drugs to carry out a death sentence. Commutation changes a sentence's punishment. Life without parole means no release from prison.
