Tens of Thousands March at Budapest Pride
Tens of thousands gathered in Budapest, Hungary for the 31st Budapest Pride. It was the first Pride march since Viktor Orbán left office.
Orbán governed Hungary for 16 years. During that time he consistently restricted the Pride event.
Police approved the 2026 parade after the change of government. They said there were no grounds to ban the march.
This was a clear contrast to the Orbán era. The parade went ahead despite very hot temperatures.
Hungary's new Prime Minister Péter Magyar did not attend. His position on LGBTQ+ rights is unclear.
He avoided the issue during his election campaign. Reports say anti-LGBTQ+ laws passed under Orbán have not yet been removed.
This includes a ban on Pride parades. Activists say continued pressure is still needed.
