Texas Republican Gonzales Resigns From Congress

Tony Gonzales, a Republican from Texas, has resigned from Congress. He first said he would not run for reelection.

He later filed to leave his seat. Gonzales admitted to an affair with a staffer who later died by suicide.

He was also accused of forcing a staff member into a sexual relationship. Some colleagues in Congress had threatened to remove him.

Klear Note Congress members can be removed through a formal process called expulsion. This requires a two-thirds vote from their chamber. Resignation ends the process before a vote happens.
