Trump Announces Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire for Victory Day
Trump has announced a three-day halt in fighting between Russia and Ukraine. The pause covers May 9 to 11.
This timing matches Russia's Victory Day celebrations. Both President Zelensky and a Kremlin aide confirmed the agreement.
The deal also includes a swap of 1,000 prisoners from each side. But an earlier Russian ceasefire over the preceding Friday and Saturday fell apart.
Both sides blamed each other for breaking it. Some doubt that Putin will agree to a longer peace deal.
Past truces between the two countries have largely failed. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Klear Note — Victory Day on May 9 marks Russia's 1945 World War II victory. Russia and Ukraine have fought since February 2022. Previous ceasefires between them have mostly collapsed.
