Trump Announces US-Denmark Security Deal Over Greenland

Trump announced Friday a security deal with Denmark and Greenland. This followed months of Trump's threats to take Greenland by force.

Trump said the deal gives the US full security control there. He also said the US will build a large military presence.

But Denmark and Greenland said the deal preserves their sovereignty. They said it also preserves their right to self-determination.

Greenland has said it is not for sale. The exact details of the deal remain unclear.

Danish leaders have not confirmed its specific terms. Reports say the deal would expand the US military presence there.

It would also block US rivals from building bases or forces there. The US runs Pituffik Space Base there under a 1951 treaty.

Denmark and Greenland expect to sign the deal soon. Reports say Denmark could sign it next week pending parliament approval. Earlier this year the European Union criticized Trump's push to acquire Greenland.

Klear Note — The United States already operates Pituffik Space Base in Greenland. A 1951 treaty governs that base's presence.
