Trump also proposed a 20% fee on cargo moving through the strait. He also threatened to take control of the strait.

Oil prices rose 5% on Monday after the announcements. Trump announced the moves on Truth Social and in a Fox News interview.

He said the US would become the "guardian of the Hormuz Strait." He also called it the reinstated "Iranian blockade." The moves come amid a growing standoff. The US and Iran have exchanged strikes in recent days.

Reports say Iran's strikes on Sunday and Monday hit military sites. Targets reportedly included spots in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman.

Bahrain's military accused Iran of targeting civilians in the country. The US and Iran are about halfway through a 60-day talks period.

The period comes from an agreement signed in mid-June. The United Nations shipping agency has opposed any strait fees. It says there is no legal basis for required fees.
