Trump Calls for Ships to Reopen Strait

Trump asked other countries to send ships to the Gulf. He asked China, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom to help.

Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz to almost all shipping. This was in response to US and Israeli strikes two weeks ago.

The strikes hit Kharg Island oil facilities in Iran. Kharg Island handles about 90% of Iran's oil exports.

France said it would send 10 warships. The United Kingdom said no to sending an aircraft carrier.

Iran has let some Indian ships through the strait. An Iranian official said the strait stays closed to US ships.

Klear Note The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. About one-third of world's oil passes through it daily. When Iran closes it, global oil prices can rise quickly.
