Trump Nominates Acting Attorney General for Permanent Role
President Trump has nominated Todd Blanche as attorney general. Blanche has been serving as acting attorney general since April 2026.
Trump gave him the acting role after firing Pam Bondi over her handling of the Epstein files. Blanche previously worked as Trump's personal criminal defense lawyer.
As acting attorney general he showed a willingness to carry out Trump's demands. He proposed a $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund.
It drew criticism from both parties. Blanche then said the Justice Department would not pursue the fund.
California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff called on the Senate to strongly oppose the nomination. Schiff said Blanche has been unable to stop acting as Trump's defense lawyer and represent the American people instead.
The Senate must confirm Blanche for the permanent role. It is not yet clear if the Senate will do so.
