Trump Signs Order to Rename Lake Ontario
President Trump signed an executive order Thursday. It renames Lake Ontario as "Lake America." Trump said the change happens immediately for US federal use.
But it cannot force Canada to use the new name. Lake Ontario borders New York state and Canada.
The order tells Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update federal map records. Trump first suggested the renaming earlier this week.
This happened during a trade dispute with Canada. Trump previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico as "Gulf of America." That was part of his effort to rename major bodies of water.
Klear Note — Executive orders direct the US government, not Canadian authorities.
