Turkey Arrests 225 Activists Before NATO Summit
Turkey has arrested 225 activists before the NATO summit. Thousands of police have also been sent out as part of security measures.
A strict ban on public gatherings is in place. The ban runs for 13 days from midnight on June 28 to midnight on July 10.
The NATO summit will be held on July 7 and 8 in Ankara, Turkey. Leaders from all 32 NATO member states will attend.
They include US President Donald Trump. Defense ministers and other leaders will discuss national security and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have both criticized the arrests and the gathering ban. Human Rights Watch says Turkey misused terrorism laws to silence people before the summit. NATO also declined to give press passes to some independent Turkish media outlets that had criticized President Erdoğan.
