UK Ambassador Got Job After Failing Security Check
Peter Mandelson was made the United Kingdom's ambassador to the United States. But he had failed his security check before getting the job.
Security officials said no to giving him clearance. Then Foreign Office leaders overruled that decision and gave him clearance anyway.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he only found out about this earlier this week. Ministers say Starmer would have blocked the appointment if he had known.
This is damaging because Starmer had told parliament that full checks had been followed. He had said Mandelson passed vetting.
The top Foreign Office official Olly Robbins was removed on Thursday night. Reports say this was a direct result of the vetting scandal.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy also did not know the Foreign Office had overruled the vetting decision until Thursday. Starmer is set to speak to lawmakers on Monday to explain what happened.
Klear Note — UK ambassadors need security clearance to access classified information. The Prime Minister oversees major diplomatic appointments. This scandal damages trust in government honesty.
